A blanket I helped design for my client Laguna Beach Textile Co. went viral when actress and musician Selena Gomez shared a photo of herself wrapped in it in a private club in Malibu. It quickly became a popular meme.
I think that the power of the photo is a bit similar to the why the Mona Lisa is so popular—the ambiguity of the expression, and the feeling that the sitter has a secret and is a little smug.
As you can see, many of the memes that work for Selena Gomez, also work for the Mona Lisa:
It’s strange to see this blanket all over news outlets and X. It’s also a reminder how much platforms can make a difference. And perhaps more fundamentally, it’s a reminder of just how much art holds onto the same themes across centuries.
Newsletter looking different? That’s because I’ve switched from Mailchimp to Substack since Substack has more features and ability to connect with more readers. I’m still trying to figure it out, so apologies if it’s a little wonky. Hope you’ll stick around!
