I use AI in all the ways you do. I never thought about having it ask me a series of questions. I’ll have to try that out.

The best use of it I’ve found recently is not art related. I had it create a resume for me. Since there is enough information about me out there, there was enough to grab that it did exactly what I needed it to and phrased it well.

Thanks David! Yes, I bet AI is really good at resumes. Summarizing is one of the best ways I find to use it.

I've tried to keep my head in the sand with AI, but it's getting increasingly more difficult to do, especially when my students seem to be using it a LOT. Thanks for these thoughtful tips and resources!

Glad you found it useful, Kelcey! I don’t envy your role as a professor with the proliferation of AI right now.

I ask AI to be my writing coach and taught others how to work with AI with integrity.

Susanah .. do you teach any cartoon drawing classes or is it all through private coaching?

Interesting use, Kelly! I've tried it with writing advice of an outline, and found it quite accurate in some regards (less so in others... like with much of AI).

I'm planning on offering some workshops in the new year so stay tuned for that here on Substack and I'll also post about it on Instagram @woodmanmaynard ! Anything in particular you're interested in?

Hi Kelly! I teach the occasional workshop (like the AI one with SAW shared above), but mainly teach longer courses through California College of the Arts. Katharine is the one who offers coaching and may be able to speak to other offerings she has; what exactly are you looking for?

It’s so tricky in my line of work. Everything is new, so AI tends to not know what it’s talking about (there’s not enough source material), but the best thing it does help me with so far is finding where exactly in a tariff or other legal source the material I’m looking for is. This also reminds me, I need to connect with Allie of AI with fame to check in to see how a presentation for coworkers and I might cost.

Yeah, the work you do is super technical, I’m not surprised AI gets it wrong. But it’s good you’re finding ways to leverage it regardless.

Honestly, thank you for this! I've been trying to navigate my relationship with AI as a writer and plan to write about it soon, and its very similar to this. I don't want AI to do my writing for me, but I've used it to give me lists of terrible ideas so I can have a jumping off point for a better one, or in a historical story I was recently writing I used it to tell me how a specific process might have been done in the 1960s and 70s (which I then corroborated with additional research, but it got me going in the right direction). It's still such new territory, but if it can (more ethically than now) help us ease the burden on the businessy side of stuff especially, like with emails and marketing ideas, and leave the creative to us, I think that could be very nice.

Thanks Sarah! And yes, I find that the list of bad ideas AI gives can really help me come up with good ideas in response.

I use an AI website to find random locations for me to paint. I said I would never use ai. I guess never say never. 🤣

I use it to write marketing blurbs for my books. I hate doing that stuff.

I feel you, Alex! Marketing blurbs are the worst. Although AI likes to add accolades to my work that don’t exist which always cracks me up.

I used Claude.ai to generate questions for an interview I conducted as research for a graphic novel project -- Claude.ai is a product of Anthropic.com and similar to ChatGPT. My son works in AI and recommended Claude because he felt it was a bit "warmer." perhaps friendlier. Thanks for this interesting post : )

Thanks Ellen! I like Claude too! I agree it's "warmer" and the interface is nicer. I've just used Chat GPT more which is why I recommend it here. Generating questions for an interview is definitely a great use for AI.

You've given me a lot of ideas about how to use AI better - thank you! I most often use it as a thesaurus, to define a term for me, or to help with my daughter's math homework :)

Thank you for this post, Katharine ! When we were talking about this during your visit a couple weeks ago, I was excited to hear your perspective on AI—nuanced and skeptical but open. Not only do I appreciate the balance in this post, I also love the resources and links! Looking forward to diving deeper and learning more—I need to check out that SAW workshop!
