Wow, this is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your gift to teach others. I live in South Minneapolis too and it’s been such a hard year, bringing back all the feels and fears of when George Floyd was murdered. You summed up beautifully why I stay and I believe in this city so much.
I’ve always loved the comic medium, but in the last century, comics mostly seemed to be associated with humour, ie. addressing serious issues under a layer of satire. I love that the comic medium has evolved to be able to tell important visual stories without feeling the necessity to make people laugh. I think the visual aspect of comics can be way more impactful than words alone as this article suggests. I particularly appreciated you sharing your rough personal comic where you work through feelings of vulnerability and try to make sense of your situation in the moment. Take care❤️
I just discovered your substack and have so much admiration for what you are doing. I appreciate your laying out your doubts and insecurities and modeling how to move past them. Sending love to the people of MN.
I would love to find a cartoonist living in Iowa who might be interested in creating a Substack column for their work and become a part of the Iowa Writers Collaborative. https://iowawriters.substack.com.
Building a following is easer among a collaborative group who supports one another.
I love that you're jumping into this, using your art, your voice, your passion and persistence. Each step makes the next ones easier. We all need to find our places where we can color outside the lines drawn for us. Breathe and keep creating!
Hats off to you for a most excellent comic. The group comic is also a great solution.
And don't sweat the hateful idiots. Do what I do whenever I get such reactions to my art: consider it a sign that you've made something powerfully effective and on target. Bravo!
Thanks, Michael! People REALLY didn't like me saying crime was commonplace in Minneapolis. But that's my experience. Not so everywhere in the city, of course
Your beautiful comic sent a gentle but powerful message (how could anyone be offended??) and you've started something so important. I'm proud to say I know you, K. ♥️
I just went to an Indivisible gathering in the North Metro area. Some people there had protested at the Whipple Building and experienced the flash-bangs & tear gas. I was feeling bad that I just draw comics about my life here in Minnesota. How it feels insignificant and wrong right now,. But they were encouraging and said to keep drawing. I'm glad you are doing the #ICEOutcomics series.
The fact that you made a comic about community and reinforced its importance by activating your network to create comics / share stories in the space of a few days is amazing; I've been checking the hash tag and it's powerful to see all the comics that are being made. Will continue to reshare! Proud of you, and proud to be your friend. 🩷
Thank you Susannah! And thank you for all the help with the WaPo pitch! I could have done a whole post about that experience but so much has happened since then. I'm proud to be your friend too!
This is heroic. ❤️
Thank you, Joshua! Hope you're able to make it on Tuesday!

Thank you so much, Alison. I really believe in the power of comics now more than other.
Thanks for being so brave and taking the action. Society needs more people like you.

Ugh, I just hate the idea that anyone sent you hate messages.

We’d love to see a comic about your experiences out there, Maery. Thanks for getting out there on the streets.
