In the illustration classes I’ve taken, many of the instructors have demonstrated how important it is to do your sketches based on intuition. If things look weird, then you go back and check with rules (like perspective and proportion.) For me, I tend to study the rules when I’m repeatedly disappointed by my results. Lately, I’ve been studying storytelling because I’ve repeatedly gotten stuck trying to keep the middle part of my longer form stories interesting.
Yes, that’s a good point to use rules after the fact—to figure out where things go wrong. I have nothing against data or rules, but I do sometimes feel like we all rely on them too much. Thanks, Audry!
Nice work dressing for your run! I run hot but hate being cold for the first mile until I warm up so I always overdress and then end up yanking layers off, only to end up with icicle sweat afterwards 🤣 this is a great suggestion, will try it next time! Sometimes we just don't know how to trust ourselves when creating so we look to "experts" to make sure we're "doing it right." I've learned the hard way how much it stifles my creativity - letting it rip and cleaning up later if needed (it's usually not!) is baked into my process.
I feel you on wearing too much at the start of the run, Jen! My spouse (who is an ultrarunner) always says, "you should be cold when you start" which I find SO HARD to do and like you will end up peeling off layers, or just sweating too much.
Totally agree on the issues with looking to "experts" to make sure we're doing it "right."
I always read these in my other email account that's not linked to Substack, so I have to remember to go back to reply! But I was down on data recently too and loved this affirmation of our intuition!

Be bold, start cold!
I love that rhyme! I'm totally going to use that from now on. Thanks, Lermy!

This is so real. Numbers and data can get in you in your head so fast. They're sometimes helpful, but not always.
Thanks so much, Sarah!
