I struggle a lot with speach bubbles and their placement; and as a teacher, I've been noticing through the years that bubbles and text are one of the things that students struggle with the most, maybe because their importance is so overlooked...
Glad you found the post helpful, Joana! Yeah, speech bubbles are tough thing for a lot of creators to understand. And it can be easy to get lost in the art creation sometimes and forget that readability and clarity really are the most important things!
Thanks, Sarah! I actually don’t use Procreate, but Photoshop. But I like CSP because of the ability to see thumbnails of each page and quickly go between one page and the next. I find that really helps me with pacing.
Amazing post, thank you! 😊 What software do you use for creating your font? I've been considering doing that but it feels like it's a huge task 😮💨 So far I have only done the lettering by hand, which probably won't work long term.
Thanks, Ana! I used the website Calligraphr for my Gatsby graphic novel and for my current book, John Martz created the font based on my handwriting https://www.calligraphr.com/en/
A really fun read! I’ve found through trial and error that I like using the CSP speech bubble tool with a white fill but no black line so that it’s not jarring with my drawing style.
Thanks Rachelle! Yes, I like that style of speech bubbles too although I find I can’t use it regularly since my watercolor pages tend be too light colored and the bubble can kinda disappear. Glad it works for you!
Really cool post! I love the use of other comics’ for examples. And I can’t wait til the big news!
Thank you so much, Mike!

Thanks for such a great, clear post!

I have a bad tendency to try and cram too much dialogue in a single speech bubble! I should try your approach of writing the dialogue first! XD;
I hope it helps you out, Suzume! I find it really helps me both pair down my text and keep me from cramming too much into the speech bubbles.
Love this! 🔥
Thanks, Susannah!
Oh I love this!! Have you done a post on clip studio vs procreate? I'd be interested in your take on that.

Oh interesting!! So good to know. I always love seeing behind the scenes of people's processes.
