When my kids were in the house, they were forever my go to models. I'd pose them, take a photo, adjust, take another photo, etc. Now that they've moved out, I've only myself and the camera timer to rely on. It's less efficient, but it gets the job done!
Thanks, Anna! At the time he said, "Sure, I'll be the dead body, but you cannot share this photo online." I agreed, and didn't, but now it's been so long that he didn't mind my sharing it at all, and instead he finds it funny.
Ok but that feeling that you should know all the things from memory is so real?? Why??? This is so fun and such a good reminder that using references is like...what artists SHOULD do.
Yeah, I was trying to figure out where that idea that everything should be from memory comes from…maybe pre-internet and easy access to cameras when taking reference was a lot more time intensive?
Starting a new intensive course with my students tomorrow creating a short graphic memoir about trauma. I’m looking for exercises that lighten the mood. They are gonna love this! Thanks for posting. 🩵
Love this! I'm teaching my fiction workshop and this makes me think a lot about the importance of references to get details right in writing too! It's too easy to have a vague picture in our minds that only gets more vague on the page. Maybe I should start suggesting that writers find or create reference imagery to work from!
Haha omg my phone is full of terrible poses
Ha! And Lucas as a model too 😊
Yea I need to find a way to work him into the book!
Ah yes. Your book does need a vicious guard dog in it ;)

That’s so fun that your kids could help, Brandon! I hope you kept some of those photos.
I definitely saved them!
Yes! I find myself making the facial expressions of the comics I'm drawing at the moment.
Yeah, facial expressions are fun to act out!
This is so great! Thank you so much! xx
Thanks, Jane!
I do this a lot, just yesterday. It’s great your husband is a good sport in the twisted poses. :)
It is indeed!
:)
Hahaha yes!
Loved the reference photos. I learned from you and took a picture of my feet dangling off the edge of the bed since it was faster than using Google 😊👍
Yay! I’m so glad to hear that, Ann!
That one of your “unpaid intern” is pure genius—hilarious!

Love seeing this - and great examples.
Thank you, Amy!
Thanks Amy!

Just pre-ordered Tuck! :D I am so excited!
Aww, thanks so much, Sophia!
P.S. just bought Gatsby. My students will enjoy it and can scour it for poses you might have tried yourself.
Oh thank you so much, Pam! I hope you all enjoy it!

Sounds like a great class, Pam! I’m glad this could help lighten the mood.
This is so affirming. I always feel like I'm cheating anytime I look at a photo, even my own reference photos. This was a great read, thank you.
Thanks, Oscar! And you are NOT cheating :)

Yes! One of my Substack readers who is a writer says she acts things out for her writing too because she notices details she wouldn't otherwise.
